The Last Story is a 2011 Nintendo third-person action role-playing game with stealth and strategy elements, with a fantasy action-adventure romance-drama storyline, directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi and developed by Mistwalker and AQ Interactive for the Wii. It was published by Nintendo in Japan and Europe and by Xseed Games in North America, and is copyrighted by Nintendo. The game's name and logo have been compared to the Final Fantasy series, which was created by Mistwalker's head, Hironobu Sakaguchi, who previously held the post of executive producer for the Final Fantasy series.
The Last Story has received critical acclaim since it's release, many praising its storyline, graphics, characters, and gameplay. The game has a nearly perfect score on every review it's gotten. Any criticism mainly went to character models' poor facial expressions. The game was the runner-up in "2012 Best Game for Wii/Wii U", losing first place only to Nintendo's own New Super Mario Bros. U. Many have gone on to say that The Last Story is one of the greatest games on Nintendo consoles of all time. XSeed Games went on record to say that The Last Story is the most successful game they have published.
The Last Story has some similarities to some Nintendo series:
- Super Mario
- Mario & Luigi series: both series are RPGs that have a humorous tone to them, and also has a princess in need of saving (though that's common with most Super Mario games).
- Luigi's Mansion series: the Haunted Mansion chapter in The Last Story is based on Luigi's Mansion. Yurick's fear of ghost and his reaction throughout the chapter is also similar to Luigi's fear of ghost and his reaction (though Yurick was appearantely more afraid as he wet himself). The spirits bringing the suits of armor to life may have inspired the Tough Possessor boss in Luigi's Mansion 2: Dark Moon.
- The Legend of Zelda: The antagonist in both series bear a striking resemblance to another, and the gameplay in both series is somewhat similar.
